Single: Slow Club: Because We're Dead/ B-Side Sunday

Sheffield youngsters Charles and Rebecca’s first single is a brilliant introduction to their very individual brand of country tinged indie-pop. Simplicity is everything with this duo and by keeping things stripped down they’ve created a sound which has the immediate effect of making you want to see them live. Touring frantically for the past few months seems to have paid off and transferring all that live goodness to vinyl, keeping production simple and vocals at the forefront of everything, was a great move.

The misleadingly titled Because We’re Dead is, in the best possible way, a bit silly. There’s a mouse and a tiny house and yet somehow they’ve completely avoided sounding twee or contrived, quite a feat. Much of this is a result of their great voices, reminiscent of the Magic Numbers without the transatlantic drawl, sweet and folky their layered vocals are so perfectly matched, and effortlessly it all just fits into place. The ease of it all makes their sound almost irresistible. This is comfort music, designed to put you in a good mood for all of the 2.55 minutes that the single lasts.

Onto Sunday, which offers more of the same if a little more laidback in tempo. A song about a series of unfortunate accidents, ‘Today was my unlucky day, I lost my conkers in a game, then I lost my marbles too’, it soon turns into a footapping, acoustic delight of a love song, playground in lyrics and tone but still knowing enough not to be juvenile.

All incredibly listenable and just plain fun, Slow Club want you to cheer up, right now.
