Live: Barringtone w/Lord Skywave and Wet Paint - This Is Music Launch Party

A small queue outside the door upon my early arrival was perhaps a sign of how great things to come were going to be. Every band on tonight has a degree of buzz surrounding them, and all deservedly so.

Wet paint began slightly unannounced, firing off with their well-crafted grungy sound, kind of like the best side of Pixies, but these guys have a certain adorable quality to them. Lead singer, James Wignall, has a voice filled with emotion, even though at points it’s as dry as a bone. Their set goes down well with the gathering crowd, and was a pleasure to watch.

The majestically titled Lord Skywave offered an audio and visual delight; fusing dub tinged, electronic soul with grimy, obscure visuals that make the performance so much more of an experience. Electronic music often loses much of its attraction live, but the songs from Skywave’s debut album are enough to keep anyone transfixed, and the crowd were rapt by the amount of effort that had gone into this live show.

Watching the headliners, Barringtone, was - as to be expected – the highlight of the evening. Having been a big fan of lead singer Barry Dobbins previous band Clor, I was excited to see how this band would differ musically. There are definitely elements of the electro-pop, verging on math rock, sound that Clor executed so well – but Barringtone do have a distinctive sound of their own.

In a way you could suggest that they are slightly more run of the mill than Clor, but in a very positive way. They use a more constrained range of sounds and genres, with a focus on riffs and melodies that are intricate, fast paced and fantastically jumbled to create a sound that is instantly attractive and unique.

Their set seemed to be over far too soon for most, with a resounding groan of disappointment when they begin to leave the stage. I suppose in a way that’s probably the best response a band could hope to get.
