Carlotta Actis Barone A/W 2012 by Lo Parkin.
Given Carlotta Actis Barone‘s propensity for the theatrical I knew we could expect something interesting for her A/W 2012 presentation at Fashion Scout. This season she chose something even more controversial than seal clubbing and prostitution – taking inspiration from the Shoa, otherwise known as the Holocaust. This was translated into a moody catwalk production where models moved at a slow pace through thick reams of dry ice. Their faces were pallid, eyes mere black holes lolling in the middle of distressed hair halos as the girls swayed unnervingly towards the bank of cameras.

Work Liberates, the words found above the gates at Auschwitz, adorned mesh body stockings and tights in a geometrical pattern – so that models were ‘wearing the offence so as not to forget.’ Styled with black knee high Hunter wellies the collection was dominated by a series of beautiful tight fitting dresses – flounced and peplumed on the sides and posteriors. Sparkling embellishment featured in the back panel of one particularly glorious evening dress.

Despite the contentious nature of her inspiration the clothes in this collection were perhaps the most sedate I have seen from Carlotta Actis Barone – taken apart from the press description and catwalk atmospherics they were entirely wearable. Plums, black and midnight blue trousers; blouses, dresses and overcoats – all commercial areas were covered for A/W 2012. There were certainly no wild headpieces (despite a credit for them, which left me somewhat bemused)… The controversial reference material seemed a tad superfluous and unnecessary, merely a way to attract attention. This was a solid showing but I’d prefer to see a return of her more extravagant showpieces, in garment form.
