Corrie Nielson S/S 2013 by Deborah Moon.
I knew we could expect something really special from Corrie Nielsen‘s S/S 2013 show: but even I was not prepared for the staggering beauty of this collection….
The Florilegium collection was inspired by visits to Kew that Corrie Nielsen described in my preview interview, but only the talented Fashion Fringe winner could interpret flowers and greenhouses in such an unusual and visionary way. Not for Corrie the usual floral prints or kitsch one dimensional representations of the botanical world: instead she has used the forms she discovered in the gardens and in the tomes of the Kew library to create a series of highly desirable showpieces worthy of red carpet status.

Silks furl like artfully drooping petals, cascade in delicate ripples or rise in round backed stiff shouldered dress coats. The hem of a short box shaped jacket echoes the flared lines of the famous greenhouses, and is followed by a daring tropical dress, the peplum a perfect hot house for the delicate applique leafwork on sheer train and bodice. The entire form of a peony rose is draped to magically envelop the whole body in a staggeringly beautiful dusky pink silk dress; the look topped with a gorgeous headdress by Emma Yeo.
The show closed with a dip dyed wedding dress, a floral overskirt split into petal forms atop a fairytale light-as-feathers ivory train. It was a garment fit for a daring princess but the cleverness is this: many of the pieces within this avante garde collection were highly wearable. Twist cut trousers, tie neck blouses and cap sleeve jackets were cut with signature precision and will appeal to buyers and aficionados of great design to be worn every day. Amaze.
