Vitor A/W 2011 by Sam Parr.
Sunday began at Off Out Of Schedule with a super quick and well edited showing from our friend Vitor (or V!tor, case as it is sometimes written), visiting from Moda Lisboa in Portugal as one of the international contingent that included myself. He’s a charming character who originally hails from São Paulo in Brazil.
Vitor answers some questions. Such a cutie!
Vitor had previously described his collection to me as “fancy concept related sportswear” but the somewhat longer blurb in the Fashion Week Poland guidebook says that the A/W 2011 Tanzania collection “was inspired by the biggest population of albinos, living on the east coast of Africa.” Albinos are compared to our relationship with China – where we have great fear but also envy of the ‘other’. Vitor also compares these feelings to the fast spreading QR code technology – whereby a two dimensional barcode has the opportunity to impart a lot of information very quickly – but all this is done at a superficial level.

Zig zag patterns that at first appeared to be almost Egyptian-esque were inspired by QR designs, and appeared circled around necklines and snaking over hips in short skirts. Shirts were simple and wearable in shades of grey, petrol and buttermilk and knitwear, worn in crop jumpers and as arm protectors for both men and women, was particularly strong. Tanzania was shown in the upper engine at Bielnik and Elektrownia at Podsiad?o Ksiezy Mlyn, with bright spotlights capturing the models as they strode at breakneck speed towards the photographers (Vitor and I had earlier discussed how slow most of the catwalk shows were). Apparently there were some complaints, but me thinks that Poland needs to adapt to faster walking speeds…
I also took a few snaps of the models after the show, including Lisbon based British model Fiona Bunnett, whose accent is partly Portuguese with a hint of Newcastle. I’m hoping I’ll get to see Vitor show again on home territory later this year…
