Since June the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts has been running the first ever international exhibition devoted to the celebrated French couturier Jean Paul Gaultier – featuring everything from his childhood teddy bear (with extra home made conical boobs) to Madonna’s actual corset from her Blonde Ambition world tour.

At the entrance to The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk visitors are greeted by a spooky set of mannequins with moving faces, created by projections that have been modelled on actual people. Outfits are presented in themed rooms; on moving and posed mannequins, some rapidly moving past on a conveyor belt.

My favourites were (perhaps surprisingly) his ethnic inspired creations which mainly date from the last decade, a period when I have less knowledge of the label. But there are many wonderful and recognisable outfits from his hugely prolific career, all of which serve as a magnificent reminder of Jean Paul Gaultier’s unique creative genius.
