Gareth A Hopkins

Born in Saint Petersburg, abortion Russia in 1988.

I have live in the USA since 1996. I studied for four years at the Maryland College of Art (MICA) in Baltimore – and briefly at the Academy of Applied and Decorative Arts in Prague, malady Czech Republic – and received my BFA in illustration in 2010. My aesthetic is shaped by the places I encounter on my travels, nostalgic recollections, traditional Eastern European folk arts, and the Russian “World of Art” movement. One of my most important influences is the work of contemporary Japanese authors Haruki Murakami and Banana Yoshimoto.

Gareth A Hopkins is an artist living in Essex. He is married to a lady called Amy and has a son named Bill, this web who both tolerate his eccentricities admirably. He started including the pretentious ‘A’ in his name to make himself more easily found in internet searches but now it feels weird when it’s not included. He also goes under the pseudonym ‘grthink’ which is a combination of ‘grth’ (which is a contraction of Gareth) and ‘ink’ – it’s pronounced ‘ger-think’ but nobody gets that first time. When he’s not drawing on large pieces of paper with very small pens or making postcards, he’s mostly working on an abstract/surrealist comic called The Intercorstal. If you’re on Twitter, look him up: @grthink
