Methyr to Mayo

On Sunday 23rd May the Merthyr to Mayo solidarity bike ride sets off from, well, Merthyr. This caravan of bicycles will travel across the Irish sea and wend it's way through Galway down towards the Rossport Solidarity Camp, which has been resisting the efforts of Shell to build a gas pipe line onto the shore where they plan to build a refinery extremely close to the local community. We should be arriving there on Friday 4th June, just in time for the 5th annual Rossport Solidarity Camp Gathering - a weekend jam-packed with workshops, music, family activities, discussions and fun.

Across the world, whether it be against the extraction of tar sands in Alberta, Canada, or oil in the Niger Delta, local communities are fighting the might of both corporate power and the complicity of their own governments. The bike ride aims to raise awareness of this, and show that there is an alternative way of living, without heavy reliance on fossil fuels. As H. G. Wells said “When I see an adult on a bicycle, I do not despair for the future of the human race.”

You can read much more about the bike ride here and check the route here. I will also be twittering live from when I join it with my travelling ceilidh band Green Kite Midnight, and will blog on my return. Anyone is welcome to join in, and if you can take some time out of the busy working world, I would urge you to join us. So much more fun and productive than lying like a whale on a beach somewhere sunny.
