I Wish I Could Have Loved You More is the intriguing debut from Candie Payne, a Liverpool via New York songstress. It’s a case of back to the future for this classic, 60’s influenced dark pop sound. Heavily indebted to the past these tracks do retain a modern sound, with the title track and All I Need To Hear being the standout cuts.
Production comes from Simon Dine, of Noonday Underground fame who brings his updated mod sounds to the fray, which proves to be the perfect accompaniment to Candi’s sultry voice.
Coming on like a lost soundtrack to a classic 60’s Brit film, there are traces of Scott Walker and Bond themes in the orchestration as Candie carves herself out as a modern day chanteuse.
By Tomorrow falls just the wrong side of pastiche; more Austin Powers than James Bond, but there is enough on offer in this sampler to suggest that the full album will be a real joy.
