After sterling support from electro-popsters Morton Valence, headliners Let’s Wrestle took to the bijou stage of Brixton’s Windmill.
There was a distinct air of wilfully making it up as they went along, cheerfully admitting that they didn’t have a set list, though repeated requests for their signature tune, Let’s Wrestle, were met with “we’re playing that at the end!”.
With their angular, post-punk inspired sound and witty lyrics, Let’s Wrestle will undoubtedly draw comparisons with Young Knives, perhaps not helped by also being a three-piece, and I did notice distinct similarities between them. That said, they are great fun, though some of the references to Giant Haystacks and Mick McManus might have gone over some of the audiences’ heads, but to badly paraphrase the late Kent Walton, maestro of ITV’s Saturday afternoon wrestling from back in the day, “it’s grapple time!”
