Indigo Moss

The Triplication, Bank, 3 May 2007

Written by Sophie Hill

A string-based combination of banjo, guitar, mandolin and double bass: Endearingly tuneful this Americana-inspired quartet waltz through tracks, complimenting each other with their skilfully played instruments and delicately pitched voices. A duo-lead, Trevor and Hannah-Lou Moss alternated their solos, occasionally combining harmonic sounds to create some pretty little ditties; some melancholic, some eerily sweet; their rustic attire blending perfectly with their pagan-propelled spirits.

Suicide Song depicts their more sombre moods, whilst Dang Nabbit reveals more quirk and spice. Quite a surreal setting for a band with potentially so much character, the Triplication at Bank Station hosted the ensemble that started out as buskers and remain faithful to the buzz of the city underground. Not entirely convinced that the setting was doing them justice, I began to envision hay-bails and dusty boots to take my mind off the catwalk of suits that paraded through the bands stage, disrupting slightly their mystical presence. Nevertheless, suitably signed to Butterfly Records they have released their self-titled album Indigo Moss and are all set to push forward with their third single on 9 July 2007. They will be playing at The Green Man Festival in Wales between 17-19 August, alongside the likes of Joanna Newsom, The Broken Family Band, Alela Diane and Findlay Brown. Hill-Billy-folk I’d like to be able to call them, because they unnerve me a little though their sounds ring so pleasantly in my ears.

Indigo Moss, certainly not for the anti-folk hearted, but if you are even slightly intrigued by hand-pressed cider and a roll around in the grass, you might just love them.
