URBANART – Burning Candy + Panik’s new work
OLLY BECK – The Impossible Room (project space)

Photography courtesy of Urban Art

There are a lot of artists out there doing good work being part of and supporting their community. Panik, ‘Burning Candy’ at Sartorial plain air and Jeni Snell’s inflatable bunker ‘Fortress Sartorial’, are part of a local community graffiti interactive event with the participation of South Camden Youth Access Point and Corams Fields Youth Resource Centre. These open workshops events are supported by the Arts Council, Camden Council and O2 It’s Your Community.

Olly Beck’s chosen title for his debut show at Sartorial Contemporary Art ‘The Impossible Room’ is taken from JG Ballard’s experimental and seminal book ‘The Atrocity Exhibition’ written in 1970. And like Ballard coming out of the 1960’s, Beck’s recent painting precludes a decade of millennial hope tainted and occluded by extreme political, cultural and domestic crises. For Ballard and his contemporaries it looks to us like this sudden dystopia was written on the wall for all to see – and thus responded to (within the luxury of our retrospective insight) in a unified way. But our current experience is bizarrely more subtle and full of detached and unending ambiguous irony. Who or what we believe in becomes less and less clear. Beck’s work contains and runs with these lines of upended meaning, and his reading of Ballard’s notion of a room or a space with its ‘psychotic’ apparitions is perhaps an epitaph of our ‘silent rage’ and unattended loss…

Photography by Ritam Banerjee

Here at Amelia, we’re an international bunch. So let’s head to India. How about being moved by a bard? For Ritam Banerjee is a poet, albeit a soulful one. “For over a decade now, all that I have been doing is to turn negatives into positives.” In light of recent tragic events, his photographs are a poignant and fitting ode to the slain city of Mumbai. Banerjee believes in artists with a social conscience and is the worthy recipient of the coveted ‘Karmaveer Puraskar’, an Indian national award for Social Justice & Citizen Action commissioned to recognize individuals who have been pivotal for leading change. The awards are given to individuals from various sectors for their contribution to promote social justice and action. For those of you in Mumbai, here is something not to be missed.

Photographs will be on display till Wednesday, December 2, 2009.

MARISTELLA COLOMBO – My Body Landscapes

We’re continuing with the international exhibitions to head over to France and Italy and have a look at photographer Maristella Colombo. Matieres Sensibles is an international photo festival now in its 3rd Season; its current theme is CORPS, IDENTITES, TERRITOIRES, FRONTIERES ( Bodies, identity, territories, frontiers). Since 2007, in Novembre, this French alternative event organised by artists exhibits in restaurants, bars and book shops. The concept is an interesting one: take artist installations and musicians and mix it with performance to get the sort of vibrant happenings we, at Amelia, really get excited about! This year, there is an exchange with Milanese artist Pomezia Uno and more of the exciting blend of sculpture, fashion, music and fun for what looks to be really fun shows!

Monday 9th November, Jarvis Cocker, Village Underground

The former Pulp man is relocating the piece he performed recently in the French capital to Shoreditch. This three-day event sees members of the public BYI (bring your own instrument) to participate in on-the-spot improv accompanying various types of exercise classes. Cocker’s artist mates will also be joining this eccentric project at various points, culminating in a concert on Wednesday evening. For more info go to www.jarviscocker.net

Tuesday 10th November, Flaming Lips + Stardeath And White Dwarfs, The Troxy

Wayne Coyne and his nutjob crew tote their brand new album, ‘Embryonic’, which hears them return to their ’60s/’70s psych-rock influences. In a fine display of nepotism, Coyne’s nephew, Dennis fronts support band SAWD, who play not radically dissimilar space rock, with a country-rock tinge.

Wednesday 11th November, Gonzales + Akira The Don, The Pigalle Club

With recent achievements including a 27-hour performance and keyboard duel with Andrew WK, Parisian keyboard whizz Gonzales is something of an extreme pianist. This is the second installment in a four-week run of his ‘piano talk shows’. Each week Gonzales has a different guest and tonight it is the turn of Brummie laptop rapper Akira The Don and hula hooper, Marawa The Amazing.
The freaky, trance-inducing, electro-psychedelia from LA’s Lucky Dragons, is a beguilingly delicate take on Arthur Russell’s and Four Tet’s avant pop. Their last ICA visit saw them set-up stage in the middle of the audience as opposed to the actual stage, making for a ‘no fourth wall’ performance. This is the opening night of a nine-day festival of experimental music and sound throughout the ICA, with performances, workshops and discussions.

Atlas Sound is the 4AD-signed solo project of the often controversial Deerhunter front man Bradford Cox, who plays a strange, haunting strand of psychedelic pop as heard on recent second album, ‘Logos’. Support comes from London quartet working their driving mix of psych rock, pastoral nu-folk and grooves.

Monday 2nd November, Daniel Johnston and Laura Marling, Union Chapel

Troubled singer-songwriter troubadour Johnston returns to the circuit playing his brand of brutally honest lo-fi songs ahead of next year’s new album release. Joining him in this tour is equally avoiding of eye contact and (almost) equally as beguiling, Marling who will probably also have new material to share.

Tuesday 3rd November, Camera Obscura, Shepherd’s Bush Empire

Glaswegian group, Camera Obscura, play their saccharine, melancholic indie pop evocative of Belle & Sebastian including latest album, ‘My Maudlin Career.’

Wednesday 4th November, Everything Everything, ICA

These four Mancunian chaps have provided one of Amelia’s Magazine’s favourite songs of 2009 in Photoshop Handsome, we’re hoping the rest of their set can deliver as perfectly crafted indie pop and doesn’t veer to far down The Futureheads vein.

Thursday 5th November, Dead Kids, Gaggle and Invasion, Corsica Studios

This club night by South East London collective, Off Modern, consistently puts out great music and for their fifth birthday celebration they are putting on a right royal shebang of a party. The celebratory music is provided by party starters Dead Kids, all-girl choir sensation Gaggle (pictured) and cosmic psych-metallers Invasion.

Friday 6th November, Peggy Sue, Sons of Noel and Adrian, Mechanical Bride and Lulu & The Lampshades, ICA

For the sake of adhering to the mantra including the words, ‘variety’ ’spice’ and ‘life’, we wouldn’t usually promote revisiting venues in the same week, but Peggy Sue, formerly possessed of Pirates, gives us an excuse to do just that. There are a host a great support acts including our former Music Editor, Lulu & The Lampshades.

For an anti-X Factor, anti-Saturday night out sample this almighty cast of folk polymath players play The Tabernacle with Yorkston heading the bill. Enigmatic Roberts and ethereal Hampton are particular gems in this stellar line-up.

Sunday 8th November, Espers, Rough Trade East

This Philadelphian neo-folk sextet are known for their evocative blend of traditional and 60s folk and, yes you guessed it, have a new album to plug, ‘III’ follows a self-consciously song-based path. And what’s more this is free.

A remarkable 2,400 entrants have applied this year, resulting in over 6,300 images to be whittled down to sixty pieces for the final exhibition, including the four overall winners and the winner of the Godfrey Argent Award for an outstanding portrait by an entrant between the ages of 18 and 25 years old.

Panik – Changing Faces

Panik, the alias of Jack Murray is said to be one of the most prolific young graffitti writers of today. More accustomed to using the streets of London as his canvas, he is now bringing his work to the confines of four walls for the first time, in the form of this exhibition at The Underground. Panik comments that, “Creating work in the studio helps me move in the right direction, relax, delve into my thoughts and break down my style, which gives me confidence to experiment more on the streets. At the same time painting on the streets releases a lot of my inner tensions and gets my adrenalin pumping fuelling a lot of what’s behind my paintings”. Get yourself down to Argyle Walk this Thursday for the Private View.

November 6th – 28th, 26 Argyle Square London

Read to the bottom to find out exclusive details about a really exciting competition!

Monday 19th October, Smoke Fairies, The Borderline

Having recently been on tour with Richard Hawley, these bewitching girls settle back in London to headline their own show at The Borderline. Their sultry vocals and penchant for slide guitar will seriously turn you on.

Tuesday 20th October, Alaska In Winter, The Macbeth

We’ll be chatting to this New Mexico chap who’s friends with Zach “Beirut” Condon and A Hawk And A Hacksaw and now spends his time in Berlin making really great electro pop. An extra reason to attend is that proceeds from the gig go to Wateraid.

Wednesday 21st October, Dizzee Rascal and the Heritage Orchestra, Roundhouse

Seems a bizarre entrant into the Electric Proms schedule, but after Amelia’s Magazine saw his Glasto 09 performance we have no doubt that this talented MC can rise to the challenge. Micachu and Efterklang have done it recently so now Dizzee gets his chance to perform against an orchestral backing.

Thursday 22nd October, Ballad Of Britain, Cecil Sharpe House

What would a gigging week be without a handsome dose of folk? Well, we won’t give you the option. Join the finest singers – including Super Furry Animals’ Gruff Rhys, the U2 of folk (in a good way), Martin Carthy and longtime collaborator and personal idol, Norma Waterson – from the field recordings on Will Hodgkinson’s acclaimed travelogue The Ballad Of Britain come together for a unique concert that shows just how rich, various and creative the British folk experience can be.

Friday 23rd October, Juliette Lewis, Shepherd’s Bush Empire

There’s not many Hollywood actors that have switched to music and enjoyed the longevity that Lewis has. We put it down to her leather clad style, and sweat drenched, shrieking to rival Karen O performance. That’s not a bad triumvirate of reasons to check this gig out.

Saturday 24th October, Paloma Faith, The Forum

Wile away the woes of the plunging temperature with actress, burlesque dancer and general East End scenester turned quirky retro diva, Faith, performing tracks from her soulful debut album alongside Amelia’s Magazine folk troupe faves, Mumford & Sons. Not to be missed.

Sunday 25th October, Tinariwen, Koko

The moment you’ve been waiting for, Amelia’s Magazine is proud to present an exclusive opportunity to see desert blue Mali collective, Tinariwen at this gig. Not only will you and a friend attend the gig, but you can also go down early to the Koko show to watch the band sound-check, meet the band post sound-check, have photos taken with them, and watch a couple of the set’s songs from the side of the stage. Follow us on twitter to find out how to enter the competition.
