Amelia’s Magazine | Fashion Philosophy Fashion Week Poland S/S 2012 in Łódź: Showroom

Kollana Shoes by Celine Elliott

Time for a quick round up of the best brands that I found in the Showroom at Fashion Week Poland. Held in the industrial sized factory space between the catwalks, this was a chance to catch up with some interesting niche talent from Poland and beyond.

Fashion Week Poland stands SS 2012-Galadea
Fashion Week Poland stands SS 2012-Galadea
First up something a wee bit traditional: Galadea use embroidered folk designs from around Poland as the backbone to a range that includes arm cuffs and colourful belts.

Fashion Week Poland stands SS 2012-Agata Mocarska
This stand displayed bizarre dolls inspired by famous fashion creatures – in this case Anna Wintour – by designer Agata Mocarska.

Fashion Week Poland stands SS 2012-Malgorzata Bieniek-Straczek

I was delighted to find the work of an intriguing fashion illustrator on display. Malgorzata Bieniek-Straczek goes under the name of Maggie Piu, and that’s about all I can tell you as the press release was in Polish. Highly decorative stuff.

Fashion Week Poland stands SS 2012-Fiszerowa
Pretty beaded necklaces by Fiszerowa.

Shoes were a real winner – I especially liked these upcycled heels with appliqued animal motifs by Kollana.

Fashion Week Poland stands SS 2012-Lola Ramona
And there were more cute shoes covered in polka dots and bows at Danish brand Lola Ramona. You can buy Lola Ramona shoes in the UK on Zalando.

Fashion Week Poland stands SS 2012-Bartek Witek

Bartek Witek had a fetching range of mens’ shirting.

Fashion Week Poland stands SS 2012-Manitic
Perspex necklaces caught my eye at Manitic.

Fashion Week Poland stands SS 2012-owl bags

Loved these hand crafted fabric owl bags. Sadly I’ve lost the business card so can’t tell you who made them, though I do know she makes each one by hand, and they were displayed on a fab gold papermache cow. Update! I know who made them now! They are by Monika Wyłoga.

Over in the section dedicated to recycled and environmentally aware fashion I once again met Ekoista, otherwise known as Ania Rutkowska. She creates astonishing jewellery by bending the plastic waste from used drinks bottles.

Fashion Week Poland stands SS 2012-Dr. Martens
Lastly, Dr. Martens lent their shoes to many of the catwalk shows. Liking the flowery ones!

Zuo Corp by Rebecca Elves

Zuo Corp by Dagmara Rosa and Bartek Michalec opened with yet more pealing bells as the same 12 models on rotation were sent out in grey wimples and tightly tied headscarves. Poland supplies the international fashion circuit with many a gorgeous creature, illness but they weren’t around for Fashion Week Poland. Someone needs to go fetch them back!

Double breasted coat dresses were impressively well cut and for once the fabrics worked with the tailoring (perhaps because fabric sourcing from Italy and Germany is an integral part of the Zuo Corp brand). Note to other Polish fashion designers: see how much a bit of attention to quality changes things! There were sharp elbows, low waists, silk tailoring, intarsia knit details and sheer tights worn with high black secretary heels and chunky nugget rings. The avante garde soundtrack was a mash up of drum rolls and random bits taken from adverts. I liked the styling of the head scarfs tied on the back of the heads, and the cream silk designs with a peachy pointy finger print were very clever and wearable whilst still being quirky.

Then, all of a sudden, an excitable sprite started dancing down the stage, conducting in her wake – with the national flag – a full brass band. Sometimes something completely throws me at a fashion show, and this was most definitely one of those occasions. I had spotted one of the musicians polishing his tuba backstage so I had an inkling that something was afoot but this turn of events still took me and the rest of the audience by complete surprise because it was so totally random in the context of the show. But it was certainly one way to woo the crowd: inject a bit of unexpected humour why not?

Marcin Podsiadlo S/S 2012. All photography by Amelia Gregory.

An already popular apocalyptic theme was tackled by Marcin Podsiadło, who pumped lots of cough inducing dry ice onto the catwalk to create an appropriate atmosphere for a collection based on destruction and in particular the conflicts of the Middle East. Hoods and face coverings obscured features still further and prints on t-shirts featured broiling explosions, fire balls searing the sky. The collection was accessorised with chunky perspex armlets and necklaces by Luca Romanyi. Marcin Podsiadło is based in London, having studied at the University for the Creative Arts in the UK: read my review of his previous show here.

Natalia Jaroszewska A/W 2011 by Bianca Hamilton.

Having been driven into town in a Jaguar courtesy of a rather enthusiastic James Bond alike (and owner of the firm that was lending the cars – you wouldn’t get that kind of personal touch at London Fashion Week now would you?) I hastened to attend my very first show of Fashion Week Poland on Friday afternoon, there part of the Designers’ Avenue at the Expo arena. It wasn’t a particularly auspicious start to my weekend, shop Natalia Jaroszewska showing an off colour blend of mustard yellows, treat brown, moss and jade brights in swirling 70s designs.

Natalia Jaroszewska A/W 2011 by Bianca Hamilton.

There was a muddled mix of shapes: sweeping chiffon silk dresses with frilled cape detailing, shaggy gilets and (fake? I fear not) fur coats… but most of all what I noticed was the jewellery. Jewellery which looked as though it had come straight off the wall at Claire’s Accessories, and looked cheap and tacky on the catwalk. It was a sign that styling could be much improved for many of the shows… see what you think…

Martyna Czerwinska S/S 2012 by Cruz.

Martyna Czerwinska was first to show on the Off Out Of Schedule catwalk on Friday morning bright and early. Her show was set to an old-school silhouette dance and featured plenty of elegant dresses that would be fit for an afternoon tea dance. Long dresses with inset patchwork fishtail trains were off set by the shortest of shorts, in velvet and patchwork. Men wore dashing patterned shirts with skinny ties and curious pink mountain brooches, but the stand out outfit for men was a dashing mustard zig-zag suit worn with a casual t-shirt underneath.

I loved Olga Szynkarczuk‘s show on Sunday. BIOmimicry featured plenty of neon fabrics mixed with clever textured knitwear, sheers and laser cut showpieces, all worn with oversized perspex visors and accessorised with on trend clutches. Shapes were rounded at hemlines and around shoulders, with cut-out details a big feature of summery ice-cream coloured separates. Metallic highlights culminated with the most amazing final creation – a flexible laser cut top with a huge hooped train.

I was delighted to discover that Olga Szynkarczuk works according to fair-trade principals, using organic materials where possible and working with craftspeople to modernise traditional techniques. Her exhibition was inspired by an exhibition called My Way by artist Jean Michel Othoniel (who designed the new Swatch watches) and the spectacle of Planet Lem at the Biuro Podrozy Theatre. ‘It is an analysis of society and its weaknesses contrasted with the superhuman world of outer space and robots.’ She is currently based in London, and I was told that she has just secured a full time job designing for a well known high street brand. I hope she still finds the time to create her own collections, because her talent is too good to be lost.

Agata Koschmieder by Alison Day.

The Agata Koschmeider show inexplicably opened with a picture of the famous Flatiron building in New York before heading into a full on soundtrack of old fashioned French musical hall tunes. Models wore knitted skull caps and dark round glasses with bright red lipstick. Colouring was kept simple: cream, clinic black, health bright yellow and one final red dress. Once more there was a huge variety of shapes and styles with no discernible connection: sequinned maxi skirts, viagra buy ruched over long sleeves, capelets, asymmetric and cut out panels, a play suit, peplums, raggy oversize knits, and sheer skirts with slits. And so completes my Fashion Week Poland A/W 2011 show reports. Yay!

Amelia’s Magazine | Fashion Philosophy Fashion Week Poland Off Out Of Schedule S/S 2012 in Łódź: Paulina Plizga

Paulina Plizga S/S 2012 by Cruz
Paulina Plizga S/S 2012 by Cruz.

For her S/S 2012 collection Paulina Plizga was inspired by dance, so leading the Flesh & Bone collection down the catwalk was contemporary dancer Kaya Kolodziejczyk, who threw a series of crazy shapes in front of the unsuspecting crowd. The next models walked at a stately pace, some fast, some two by two or in hand – the back lighting emphasised their tousled hair and their blackened eye sockets gave the classical ballet aesthetic a dark, distressed edge. Paulina Plizga showed us a predominantly white collection with intermissions of grey, ochre and black in a range of textures, from holey knits and ancient lace to patchworked fabrics and reappropriated sheers.

Paulina Plizga SS 2012 by Geiko Louve
Paulina Plizga S/S 2012 by Geiko Louve.

When I spoke with Paulina Plizga after the show she described how all of her outfits are constructed from scraps which she forages from the couture houses in Paris (where she lives) and these are mixed with antique laces that she finds in markets. For relaxation she likes nothing better than to go to the cinema, and so recent viewings of Black Swan, The Red Shoes and Pina Bausch films helped form ideas for S/S 2012, along with the Greek story of Pygmalion, wherein a statue comes to life. This was a welcome second chance for me to view Paulina Plizga’s clever design aesthetics; read my review of Paulina Plizga‘s previous A/W 2011 collection here.

Agata Wojtkiewicz A/W 2011 by Michalis Christodoulou.

At last! A fast paced catwalk show. Agata Wojtkiewicz‘s collection was sent out at a sprightly pace, drug to the upbeat vocals of a female singer. There was fawn, capsule orange, and powder lilac, zippered butter soft leather and summery orange and yellow strapless pleated dresses overlaid with leather straps. Highly desirable metallic pleat maxi dresses gave a well considered nod to current trends and I particularly loved the last coppery dress. Unfortunately it was not obvious whether the furry gilet was real fur or not, though I very much hope it was fake because it looked so teddy bear cuddly. An otherwise very successful collection from a former Golden Thread Awards winner. Hurrah!
