Rob Ryan is masterful at working across disciplines: for example he’s as happy covering the surface of a plate as he is creating a huge hand cut paper artwork for the wall. And he’s no stranger to working with very basic and cheap materials – back in the day he used to screen print newspaper to make wrapping paper, and for his new project he returns to this medium.
SPQR, which stands for Senatus Populusque Ryantown, The Senate and People of Ryantown, is the first of a planned quarterly journal where Rob will test out some of the many ideas that he has, some of which will never see the light of day. Highlights include a trial for a children’s story that features an abundant apple tree, a touching portrait of the artist talking with his daughter, and glimpses into Rob’s studio and thought processes.
SPQR is for sale for just £2.13 alongside t-shirts, tiles, decorative tape and mugs on Etsy. It’s a rare chance to delve inside an artist’s mind, and it’s practically free. A must have for any Rob Ryan fan!
