Bora Aksu A/W 2014 a by xplusyequals.
It’s been several seasons since I last attended a Bora Aksu catwalk show, and I’ve missed seeing his wonderful creations up close. This season he was inspired by his mother’s school days, taking girlish elements and giving them a unique Bora twist in an unusual colour palette of monochrome combined with sugar pink, navy blue, canary yellow and blood red. Construction of the garments for Dear Birsen was, as always, thoroughly modern – similar toned high tech textured fabrics patched together to create an intriguing silhouette that included outsize puff sleeved shoulders, mesh dirndls, a boxy cape and sweeping A-line skirts.

The collection was given a nostalgic folksy feel, with knotted plaits tied together by gauzy ribbon and fair isle ankle socks peeking through the cut outs of spike heeled sandals. Rounded Peter Pan collars sweetened the more dramatic pieces, which included a multi-layered floor length cape.

Bora Aksu combines contrasting ideas with increasing dexterity, and after 10 years on the catwalk he deserves better recognition within the pantheon of great London based designers. What a fabulous start to my LFW this season.
